Started with an oddball chunk of basswood, 1.5 by 2 inches and about 4 inches tall. Just a leftover cutoff from another project. No plan, just a helmet shape in my head. At first I hadn't thought to do a face, but he kind of popped out. Initially I just thought to do a detailed helm. I used a 1.75 inch carving knife and a few Dockyard micro gouges to rough in the blocky planes and start stacking angles into armor. There's something satisfying about carving in this scale, tght lines, hard shadows
