The scaffold was positioned over the main entrance. Huge crowds attended public hangings in Carlow, with spectators often the worse for drink! Some notable executions from the 19th century include Michael and Hugh Finnegan, a prosperous farmer and his son, and William Nolan were sentenced to death in July 1822 for burglary.
