TikTok has announced “Footnotes,” its own take on the community notes features that started on Twitter and have been spreading to other social networks. As elsewhere, it’s a crowd-sourced approach to moderation — TikTok says contributors will be able to “add relevant information to content on our platform.”

TikTok said it will open access to start contributing to Footnotes in the coming months. U.S. users can apply to be a contributor as of today. They’ll have to meet the eligibility requirements of having been on the platform for more than 6 months, are at least 18 years old, and have no recent history of violating TikTok’s community guidelines.

Mark Zuckerberg said that ByteDance Ltd.’s TikTok posed a “highly urgent” competitive threat to Meta Platforms Inc. when it first sprang up in 2018, as he testified for a third day in the Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust trial.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrapped his 13-hour stint on the witness stand Wednesday in a landmark antitrust trial over his purchase of Instagram and WhatsApp in the early 2010s, during which he argued that Meta still faces steep competition from YouTube and TikTok.
