GOP Rep. Cory Mills of Florida is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department of the District Columbia for allegedly assaulting an individual, the police department told CNN.

Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) is under an active criminal investigation by D.C. police regarding an alleged assault of a 27-year-old woman.

MPD said the internal investigation will focus on department's "change in the initial classification of the offense," as well as why officers did not arrest Mills.

Police in Washington, D.C. are investigating Rep. Cory Mills, R-Fla., over an alleged assault that occurred this earlier week. According to a police report obtained by USA TODAY, officers responded to an apartment complex in Washington around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday after officers were called to the area for a reported assault.
