Nate Schmidt and Carter Verhaeghe had third-period goals, Anton Lundell had a goal and two assists and the Florida Panthers topped the Edmonton Oilers 4-3.

Edmonton Oilers fans were overjoyed when it was announced that their team had acquired Matt Savoie from the Buffalo Sabres. The 21-year-old, who was selected ninth overall in 2022, was viewed as a borderline elite prospect who immediately became the best young piece in the Oilers’ organization.

The Panthers most desperately wanted — and needed — a win in Game 7 back in late June. They took an early 3-0 lead in the best-of-7 Cup Final before squandering their first three chances to win the series by scores of 8-1 in Game 4, 5-3 in Game 5 and 5-1 in Game 6.

The last thing the struggling Oilers need right now is their top defenseman getting hurt, but Darnell Nurse is now on the shelf.
