A Fox News journalist reported late Wednesday that the Afghan-born man who shot two National Guard troops deployed in Washington, D.C., entered the United States under former President Joe Biden's chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
The statement came after an Afghan national was arrested in the shooting of two West Virginia National Guard members.
The US has suspended the processing of all immigration requests for Afghan nationals pending a review of "security and vetting protocols", the US Citizenship and Immigration Services announced. In a post on X, the agency said: "The protection and safety of our homeland and of the American people remains our singular focus and mission."
CBS News identified the shooting suspect as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, an Afghan national who entered the U.S. in 2021, with his alleged photo circulating.
Trump has ordered a widespread review of asylum cases approved under the Biden administration and green cards issued to those from 19 countries.
