Without a blockbuster budget or much experience, the creators of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 astounded the industry with an emotional narrative and old-school design.

Expedition 33" stole the spotlight at the Game Awards in Los Angeles, taking home a record nine prizes including Game of the Year. Created by Montpellier-based studio Sandfall Interactive, the stylish post-apocalyptic RPG triumphed over industry heavyweights as its creators thanked fans – and even YouTube tutorial makers – or the unlikely rise.
