TCL's new 50 series of phones is reaching US shores with the launch of the TCL 50 XL 5G on Metro by T-Mobile tomorrow. At $159, it's one of the more affordable 5G phones available to date.

The new TCL 50 NxtPaper 5G base phone was announced Wednesday at IFA 2024 alongside a Pro model, both of which include 6.8-inch displays that feature what TCL calls a Max Ink Mode.

The TCL 50 XE 5G and TCL 50 XL 5G are mid-range 5G phones with 6.6- and 6.8-inch displays, respectively. Both have a 5,010 mAh battery, 50 megapixel triple-camera system, and dual speakers.

TCL may be known for its inexpensive televisions, but the company has just launched tablets and smartphones with Nxtpaper 3.0 display technology.

It has the same display and processor as above, a 5,200 mAh battery, IP54 dust-water rating, and 18GB RAM/256GB ROM. The model we DO wish TCL would bring to the U.S. is the TCL 60 Nxtpaper.

Enabling “Max Ink Mode” morphs the TCL 50 NXTPaper 5G into a kind of E-Reader that promises 7 days of reading battery life.

The model also promises to massively extend battery life with all the phone’s features pared down. TCL promises you can go a full week or more when the phone is in Max Ink settings.
