President Donald Trump is directing the federal government to share scientific data and use artificial intelligence to accelerate discovery, including streamlining the nation’s electric grid.

The order announced the “Genesis Mission” for AI, a new federal push to mobilize the federal government's research and data to create artificial intelligence models.

Trump's executive order creates the Genesis Mission, which the administration describes as a major “marshalling of federal scientific resources.”

A White House official called Genesis "the largest marshaling of federal scientific resources since the Apollo program."

The White House has put on hold a draft executive order that would seek to preempt state laws on artificial intelligence through lawsuits and by withholding federal funds, two sources said on Friday.

The title of the executive order is on the short side for Trump: “Launching the Genesis Mission.”

So section 4 has no real, substantial legal effect on states on its own, but it’s asking the Commerce Department, in consultation with a bunch of other figures in the White House, to publish a list identifying the bad laws, the “onerous laws,” the laws that conflict with the policy set out in the EO.
