MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The U.S. is set to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the federal holiday set aside to honor the life of the civil rights icon. But in Alabama and Mississippi, Monday is also Robert E. Lee Day in honor of the Confederate general.

Every year we honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. in January. Here's everything you need to know about the holiday.

A MLK Jr. Walk on Monday will provide an opportunity for reflection from the Heartland Conservation Alliance and KC Parks. It will begin at 9 a.m. at MLK Jr. Square Park at Woodland Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Kansas City, and end at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center, 3700 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Target fans are in luck because they’ll be able to stop there on Monday. Stores will be open on MLK Day 2025. The chain will operate during normal business hours from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. so shoppers can pick up all their necessities or use any gift cards they received during the holidays.

Since the holiday was officially designated in 1983, only one president was sworn in on Martin Luther King Jr. Day: former President Bill Clinton. For his second term, Clinton's Inauguration took place on Jan. 20, 1997.
