Former FBI Director James Comey has provoked an outcry from the Trump administration after he briefly posted a photo to Instagram that federal officials alleged was a call for violence against President Trump — a claim Comey pushed back on.

Comey removed and apologized for the post, which depicted a seashell message on a beach that spelled out “86 47,” saying he did not know people “associate those numbers with violence.”

CNN aired footage showing Comey leaving his suburban Virginia home en route to the Secret Service's Washington field office.
