A historic snowstorm has blanketed eastern North Carolina, creating dangerous travel conditions on roads and bridges in Carteret County. Piles of snow blown by strong winds are blocking neighborhoods, and emergency vehicles are struggling to reach some areas, according to the county’s latest update .
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a major winter storm warning is in effect from Georgia through Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 31. Heavy snow and gusty winds are forecast from the southern Appalachians in Georgia through coastal regions of the Carolinas and southeastern Virginia.
Temperatures in southern Florida reached the coldest they've been since 1989, according to the National Weather Service.
The midweek storm could bring "a quick-hitting bout of snow," an AccuWeather meteorologist said.
The coastal cyclone is expected to bring moderate to heavy snow, along with high winds and possible blizzard conditions for the Carolinas on Jan. 31.
It could become a bomb cyclone and impact some of the same areas just hit by a monster storm this past weekend.
"An intense surge of arctic air behind the coastal storm is bringing below freezing temperatures and wind chills," the WPC said.
Charlotte sees a foot of snow while 240 million people face cold weather advisories and winter storm warnings across multiple states.
"This temperature difference, combined with a strong jet-stream disturbance that forces air upward, sets the stage for bombogenesis. Many nor’easters actually fall into this category, as cold air from Canada collides with the warm Gulf Stream, creating a perfect recipe for explosive storm growth."
